In the UK the wild mushroom season starts in April with the return of St Georges and ends in late December with winter chanterelle. However, oyster mushrooms can appear at any time of year. Autumn is generally regarded as the peak of the mushroom season but given appropriate weather (for example lots of rain) summer can be surprisingly good too.
Note: tap on the mushrooms in the list to see alternative names (latin names in brackets), more info and an image of the fungus.
The list shows the common UK names but often there can me other names for the same mushroom. For example, chefs can use different terms, often the French name. For example, chanterelle is sometimes called girolle and hedgehog fungus called pied de mouton.
